Instrument Ratings: IR (A) / CB-IR / BIR

Aero Locarno offers courses for pilots who want to take another step forward in their training, changing from visual to instrument flight rules (SEP and/or MEP). As the name implies, this training is designed to fly the aircraft without external references but using radio navigation aids on the ground or GPS systems. Part of the hours required to obtain this qualification might be spent in a flight simulator training device. Courses offered by Aero Locarno:

  • Full Instrument Rating IR
  • Competency-based CB-IR
  • Basic Instrument BIR, newly introduced by regulations

Full Instrument Rating - IR (A)

The instrument flight course is mandatory for those who want to start a career as a pilot and it is an important step for the private pilots aiming to extend their range, flying high performance airplane in instrumental conditions. The course consists of a theoretical part in distance learning or as part of an ATPL class and a practical part, which is carried out on single or twin-engine aircraft, depending on the needs of the pilots.

Competency-based CB-IR (A)

The Competency Based IR (CB-IR) is, for all intents and purposes the same as the full instrument rating with the same fundamental requirements completion standards. Once complete you will receive either a single engine or a multi engine instrument rating like the IR full course. The main benefit of the CB-IR is for pilots that have a significant amount of Instrument flying experience. Training path is defined by Aero Locarno after having carried out an assessment flight.

Basic Instruments BIR (A)

The new Basic Instrument Rating (BIR) entered into force at the end of 2021. This new Rating - especially developed for private pilots - allows to fly in class A airspaces. The flight training is “fully competence-based” with no minimum training hour requirements.
